We travel eastward through Forest and Meridian into Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, for a luncheon stop. An afternoon drive takes us into beautiful Plains, GA, for a sightseeing stop. Then it's on to Americus for the night. Enjoy a Get-Acquainted Dinner hosted by your tour escort tonight, (D) DAY 2 - GOLDEN ISLES, GA - After breakfast we take a morning drive through Tifton, GA, and Waycross. We arrive in Jekyll Island in time for lunch. Beautiful Jekyll Island is one of the six Golden Isles of Georgia just off the coast near Brunswick. The island was controlled by the Jekyll Club from 1886 until 1942. Members of the Club were mostly millionaires, such as Rockefeller, Morgan, McCormick, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, etc. who searched for a resort area where they could enjoy the sun during the winter months. The original plan was that the millionaires would stay at the Club; however, they began to build their own cottages. The area is now known as Millionaires Village and belongs to the State of Georgia. DAY 3 - TOURING JEKYLL ISLAND - ST. SIMONS and SEA ISLAND - We drive a short distance to the area where millionaires built their so called "Cottages at Jekyll Island." We board a tram bus for a view of the Moss Cottage, Goodyear Cottage, Indian Mound (the name of the cottage that belonged to Rockefeller), and the Pulitzer-Alb right site to mention a few. We then reboard our motorcoach and drive to St. Simons Island where we enjoy a luncheon and then meet our local guide for a detailed tour of St. Simons and Sea Island. We see Epworth-by-the-Sea, now a Methodist Center, located on the site of Hamilton Plantation, which was one of the largest and most famous of the St- Simons' antebellum plantations. We also see Christ Church, In 1736 John and Charles Wesley held services under the oak tree at the location of the present church. Christ Church was erected in 1884 by Anson Phelps Dodge, Jr. as a memory to his first wife. Our route takes us on to Fort Frederica, built by General Oglethorpe in 1736, three years after the founding of Savannah. It was the most expensive British fortification in North America. We also view the Lighthouse Museum Upon completion of our tour of St. Simons, we drive on I Savannah in the late afternoon for reservations at our hot there. Tonight we will have a special treat for dinner. (D) DAY 4 - SAVANNAH - CHARLESTON - Our morning begins with guided sightseeing of historic Savanna Savannah was founded in 1733. It was the first city in America laid out around a system of squares. Originally the squares were rallying points in the event of Indian am Now they have become refreshing little parks dotting I downtown area. Our tour of one of the South's most beautiful cities includes Forsyth Park, Factors Walk, Christ Chun: and the magnificent Owens?Thomas House. Luncheon Savannah and then an afternoon drive northward into beautiful, historic Charleston where we have luxurious accomodations for the next two nights in this historic area. DAY 5 - CHARLESTON and MIDDLETON GARDENS- This morning we are meet by our step?on?guide at our hotel to begin a special day of sightseeing. We begin with a tour of charming Charleston including St. Michael's Church, Cabbage Row, famous Dock Street Theater, It waterfront and many other interesting points. After lunch, an afternoon tour to Middleton Place Gardens, the oldest landscaped gardens in America, where we see the home, gardens and restored stable?yard. The first camellia japonicas brought to this country were planted here. Of the four plants set out, 3 are still living and blooming after more than 150 years. In late afternoon, we return the short distance to Charleston for an evening of leisure in this historic city. Tonight we will attend a candlelight dinner. (D) DAY 6 - COLUMBUS, GA - This morning we bid farewell to Charleston as our motorcoach swings west into Augusta and then heads southward into Macon, GA. We soon firnd ourselves in Columbus, GA, for the night. DAY 7 - HOMEWARD - We swing westward reminiscing over the beautiful color of the flowers, historic cities and the Golden Isles of Georgia. We travel through Montgomery and into Meridian for a luncheon stop on our own. Then an afternoon drive through Forest and we arrive in Jackson the afternoon with memories of a wonderful tour.
